It is my understanding


The AAU selection committee is as much if not more so political than it is a strict set of standards. An institution has to be invited into the fold, you don't earn your way in. Your earn notice but that is about it and the AAU can easily just say an institution no longer makes the grade and drop them - see Nebraska.
